Using Social Media to Effectively Promote Your Work as a Freelance Writer

One of the biggest challenges that you will face as a freelance writer, particularly if you’re just starting out, is finding ways to effectively and creatively promote your work. Social media can be a great tool for promoting your work. Using social media may seem simple, but using it to effectively promote your writing takes a tremendous amount of effort and strategy. Here are a few tips to help you use social media to successfully promote your work.

Establish an online presence across multiple social media platforms- Sharing your work across multiple social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus and LinkedIn can help increase the visibility of your work and help you reach a larger audience. If you have a far-reaching online presence, social media users are more likely to see and share your work, no matter which social media platform they’re using. As a freelance writer, it’s important to ensure that your work is seen by as many potential readers as possible. Social media shares and views can lead to more book sales or views on your website. And views and shares on social media can also help potential clients to find you. And if you’re a self-published author, you can even create your own promotional videos for your books on YouTube. Social media is great for book marketing if you don’t have the money to hire an agent or a publicist. Why hire someone to promote your work when you can do it yourself?

Even though social media is easy to use, using it to promote your writing isn’t always easy. For example, using social media to promote your work means that you have to be dedicated to sharing it often across multiple platforms. When I’m promoting my books, for instance, I share the links on a daily basis. You can use different social media tools like Pinned Tweets or Tweet deck on Twitter so you don’t have to send daily tweets individually. You can even set up your Twitter account to send out specific tweets automatically if you choose to.

Another clever way to use social media to promote your writing is to use different platforms to spread the word about contests and giveaways related to your work. Although it may seem counterintuitive, giveaways can help you promote your work. The one reader who wins a free copy of your book in a giveaway might read it, leave a review or Amazon or even tell their friends. Either way, this translates to more exposure for you and your work.

And if a previous client is pleased with your work, they may use social media to leave positive feedback. Or they just might tell their friends or family who need similar work done. As you can see, social media is not only a great way to promote your work and make it more visible, it can also help you increase your client base as well. Start using these simple and practical social media strategies and you’ll be well on your way to success as a freelance writer.

I've noticed that giveaways do a great job of bringing in new followers to social media pages- especially Facebook pages. You can often find sponsors for giveaways by seeking out small businesses in your local area or online (on sites like Etsy). Many are eager to give out a free sample in exchange for promotion to all of your followers. No publicity is bad publicity, right? They're getting their brand name out there as well when they give away an item for free through your page.

I also notice you didn't mention Instagram. Instagram is specifically a great platform to use if you want to target teens and young adults (under 30 years of age). It's also a great way to advertise if you work in the visual arts (graphic design, art, crafting, etc) where you can share your physical work.
