I got my first job editing the copy for a product brochure this weekend on Fiverr. The customer supplied an Adobe Illustrator file. I typically try to use open source source software whenever I can but the options for an Illustrator alternative that I tried simply do not measure up. My question; how often do copywriters and editors really need Illustrator? If the answer is rarely then I'm thinking I could get the seven day trial to do my job and then cancel it. I don't really want to sign up for $21.00/month software. I can view the file and copy the text to a word document for editing but I want to make this first project shine with a fully complete brochure.

Check out Affinity Designer. It can open some AI files. It also allows you to edit PDFs. A single license is $50.
However, if I were you I'd simply ask for PDFs, then write copy for the placeholders. Layout and graphic design aren't in your job description.
