I worked for free once ion fiverr, not customers but fiverr itself. It was a volunteer and agreed, I got a badge for that.

Once a customer came with a very very easy and small task, it could be done in less than one minute, I just did it and explain my service, in case they really need it and want to pay a order for a real thing. He came later with a order. You could say I gave them a free sample, but was so small (5% of the most basic gig), I didnt regret.

But yeah, some customers want a sample sometimes, 30-50% of the basic gig for free. Fortunately most are will to pay even for samples.
