I have 9 years experience proofreading and translating freelance, mainly for a German university. I really want to break into proofreading fiction/trade paperbacks. I have a hunch that publishers have a stable of freelancers they use for this, but I'm not finding job postings.
Am I off base - is this something in-house editorial assistants do? - or is there a way in?

I think it's hard to break into any type of freelancing today. As far as fiction proofreading... I'm thinking they mainly do that in house. In my 11 years online, I honestly haven't seen a job ad for something of that nature.
